What are the symptoms of alcoholism?

I write a novel and one of the main characters is an alcoholic. He is in a psychiatric clinic for this and His other diseases, and considering he is because he can not have alcohol. What are some of the symptoms / signs of withdrawal that an alcoholic, if in a Environment, where drinks are absolutely prohibited for them? Thank you for your time if you decide to help me too:)
